TANGER

Arms of Tanger (City)
Official blazon
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The head at the top of the shield may be that of Hercules, who in Greek mythology, on his quest for the Golden Apples of the Hesperidies, defeated Antaeus, the giant son of Gaia, the earth goddess and Poseidon, the sea god. Antaeus was invincible until Hercules found the source of his strength. After killing Antaeus, Hercules slept with the murdered giant’s wife, Tingi. From this union was born a son, Sophax, first king of the city of Tingis, ancestor or modern Tangiers (Tanger in French).
