Trakai (district)
TRAKAI DISTRICT
County : Vilnius
Lithuanian | blazon wanted |
English | blazon wanted |
Origin/meaning
The arms of the district are derived from the seals of the Dukes of Trakai. In the mid 14th century the seals of Kestutis and his son Vytautas showed an armoured warrior holding a small shield in his left hand. The small shield showed the arms of the Gediminas dynasty, in red three golden columns. The arms gradually evolved to become the arms of the duchy and Trakai territory. In 1795 the arms were abolished by the new Russian government.
The arms in the 15th century |
On April 6, 1845 the Trakai district received new arms, as shown below. The upper part of the arms showed the arms of the Vilnius province, and the lower part the Trakai castle, with the year 1025, the legendary date of founding of the city.
The arms of 1845 |
The historical arms were restored and officially granted on February 5, 1998.
