===Origin/meaning===
The arms were granted on March 26, 1938.

The arms are based on the oldest seal of the city, dating from the middle of the 14<sup>th</sup> century. Itzehoe had received city rights in 1238 from Count Adolf IV of Holstein. The seal showed a city wall with two towers, rising from a sea, and between the towers a small shield with the arms of the Counts of Holstein (Nesselblatt or nettle-leaf). In the present arms the Nesselblatt appears without the shield.
