Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on 11 Jan 1994 to Leeds Metropolitan University.

The books are a common symbol for universities and learning. The white roses are the symbol of Yorkshire, the county in which Leeds is situated.

The base shows the 'fountain of knowledge' on a green field, which symbolises conservation. The point is also seen as a place of protection.

The owl in the crest is taken from the arms of Leeds and is also an ancient symbol for wisdom.

The supporters are two students.

The motto - Victrix fortunae sapientia - means Wisdom is the conqueror of fortune.
