The pentagram or star is taken from the arms of the medieval Lords of Schönecken. They were a branch of the Counts of Vianden and built the local castle. Their arms were three small shield, which were combined in a star shape by Richard von Schönecken in 1388.

The chief refers to the Schönecken castle, now largely a ruin, in the village.
The division line indicates the merger of the two villages Schönecken and Wetteldorf in 1960. The colours are those of the State of Trier, to which the area historically belonged.
I have no information on the meaning of the small shield for Wetteldorf.
