Origin/meaning
Per fess gules and argent, in chief a star of five points argent and in base a pine tree proper. Crest a Phoenix issuant purpure winged or. The Star symbolising the North Star indicates that the Coast Defenses of Portland was the most northern of the Coast Defenses on the US Atlantic Coast.Motto: Terrae Portam Defendamus = We defend the land gate (or port). Later adopted by the 8th Coastal Artillery Regiment.
