Official blazon
Gules, on apall reversed azure, fimbriated or between three crosslets or, three fleur-de-lis or, surtout an enscutcheon or, fram a tounge of flame a phoenix risant, all gules.
Origin/meaning
The fleur-de-lis alluders to the early French Explorers of the Area. The Crosslets represent the three Dioceses that grew out of the original jursidiction the Diocese of Illinois created in 1835. This was in 1877 divided into three the Dioceses of Illinois (from 1884 Chicago), Quincy and Springfield. The Phoenix symboliss the rebuilding of Chicago after the great Chicago Fire.
