Series information :

  • Issued by : Many different companies in different formats in different countries
  • Date of issue : pre 1914
  • Number of stamps/cards : 50
  • Image variants : Not known, but many sizes and texts on reverse

Introduction

This series was issued in the early 20th century, probably between 1900-1914. The exact date, origin and author are not known. When a date of a certain series is known, it is mentioned below for that specific series. I have no information on the artist who made the different drawings.

The images of these series have been used in a number of different formats, from small stamps to nearly postcard size. The series have been used by a large number of companies in at least Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, the United States, Spain and the United Kingdom. It is very likely that the overview shown below is far from complete.

Not all companies seem to have issued all images, but I have no complete overview per company, neither for the series.

The printers for the German series mentioned are Dresdner Kunstanstalt AG, Sigmund Spear Kunstanstalt Dresden, Liebes & Teichtner (Leipzig), Wiener and Co (Leipzig), or Druckerei Hoeniger (Breslau), for the Dutch sometimes as Gebr. Cats, Amsterdam. One Belgian series mentions E. Deiters in Brussels. The English cards bear no reference to a printer/publisher. Most series do not mention a printer/publisher.

I also have a series of blanks, i.e. no advertising texts (yet) but only the name of the country in German. These cards were printed by JW Spear & Söhne, Nürnberg, Germany:

Arms, Flags and Folk Costume trade card

Many of the German cards show a serial number, the British may be numbered in sequence. The only Spanish series I know, uses the German numbers.
