The star in chief is taken from the arms of Cardinal [[Godfried Danneels]] under whom Bishop de Bie served. It also symbolises a starfish, a symbol for St. Mary.
 
The main charge is an eagle, symbol for St. John, the patron saint of the bishop. The red colour is the colour of love. The gold symbolises the glory of God.
 
The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop.
