Origin/meaning

In the middle of the 10th century Herisinde, daughter of the Count of Chimay helped by a group of Irish evangelising monks founding a Benedictan abbey devoted to St. Michael. Richly endowed in lands and woods the abbey has its golden age in the 11th and 12th centuries.

The arms show in the upper half an eagle, derived from the Imperial Eagle of the Holy Roman Empire, to which the abbey belonged until the 13th century. The lower half shows a pair of wings, the symbol of St. Michael.
