Wappen von Mellingen (Aargau)/Arms of Mellingen (Aargau)

Official blazon

Unter rot-weiss-rotem Schildhaupt in Gelb steigender roter Löwe.

Origin/meaning

The arms were adopted on June 28, 1935.

The arms show the lion of the Habsburg family, under a chief of the Austrian arms. The city was for many centuries a possession of the Habsburg family, Dukes (later Emperors) of Austria. The arms first appear on the local seal used from 1293.

Before the late 13th century the town already used a banner with a red ball on a silver field. This was a similar design as Lenzburg as in the 10-11th century the area was part of the Counts of Lenzburg. From 1512 onwards the colours were reversed, a silver ball on a first a blue, later a red field. In the 16th century this composition was also used as arms, so the city used the arms with the Austrian-Habsburg shield as well as the shield with the silver ball at the same time.

Later only the arms with the silver ball were used. In the 19th century also held by two lion supporters.

In 1935 the town council decided to re-install the arms from the 13th century seal.
