Origin/meaning

The bread and fish refer to the Holy Eucharist. The breads, with a small cross, also refer to a mill wheel, as a canting symbol for the name Muller (miller). The fish also is places in a way to resemble a mill wheel. The fish is, besides a symbol for Jesus, also the symbol of St. Ulrich, the patron saint of the Diocese of Augsburg.

In his arms as auxiliary bishop in Auggsburg the first quarter was divided paly in red and silver, the colours of the diocese of Augsburg. In Regensburg he changed these for the arms of the Diocese of Regensburg.

In Augsburg he never used the external attributes of a bishop. In Regensburg he also rarely used these.
