Official blazon

Shoulder Sleeve Insignia: On a black disc with a 1/8 inch (.32cm) black border, 2 1/2 inches (6.35cm) in diameter overall, the constellation Orion of seven stars superimposed by a stylized conjoined "NY" within a circle, all red.

Origin/meaning

The Insignia shows the constellation of Orion a pun on the name of the Division's World War I Commander John F. O'Ryan. The O surrounding the Constellation also alludes to O'Ryan. The other letters form the monogram NYD alluding to New York Division.

The Shoulder Sleeve Insignia was originally authorized for the 27th Infantry Division on 29 October 1918. On 4 May 1986 the description was revised and the insignia redesignated for the 27th Infantry Brigade, New York Army National Guard.
