Origin/meaning
The arms of Brno show four bars, red and silver. The oldest known seal of the city, dating from the 13th century, shows a city wall, with between the towers of the gate a small shield with the above arms. Later seals only show the bars, see image sbelow.
On February 3, 1645 the arms were officially granted by Emperor Frederik III of Austria. The arms show a shield with the Imperial eagle, with old arms on its breast, see image below. Above the head of the eagle the initials of the Emperor. These arms have been in use until the early half of the 20th century, when the eagle was removed.
