EDMUNDUS SYBRANDUS LUIJPEN

Born : June 3, 1855
Deceased : May 2, 1923

Apostolic Vicar of Batavia, 1898-1923; Titular Bishop of Oropus

Arms (crest) of Edmundus Sybrandus Luijpen

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The rock in base with the palm trees represents the Dutch East Indies as a green archipelago rising from the sea. The silver cross indicates that Christianity had already arrived there. The sun is not the tropical sun, but symbolises Christ as 'Sun of Justice', who will cherish the country.

The motto means not to flee (or escape) from labour, and indicates that there was a lot of work to be done by the bishop.
