JAMES JOSEPH SWEENEY

Born : June 19, 1898
Deceased : June 19, 1968

Bishop of Honolulu, 1941-1968

Arms (crest) of James Joseph Sweeney

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The battle axe in the chief is taken from arms of a MacSweeney clan of Ireland to represent the last name of the bishop. The main part of the shield shows two scallops (for Saint James) and a lily (for St. Joseph), the two patron saints of the bishop.
