HERMAN JAN VAN ELSWIJK
Born : April 11, 1905
Deceased : November 3, 1987
Bishop of Morogoro, 1954-1966
Titular Bishop of Elephantaria in Mauretania, 1966-1976
Official blazon
Origin/meaning
The first quarter shows the arms of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit to which the bishop belonged. The second and third quarter symbolise a piano. This symbol indicates that black and white always have to work together in harmony. They are reversed in the different quarters and also form the letter E, the initial of the last name of the bishop. The bishop was a white person among a large black congregation.
The fourth quarter is the symbol of St. Mary, to which the bishop had a strong devotion. The motto is also reflecting this.
