Official blazon

Shield: Gules, issuing from base a sheaf of wheat Or surmounted by a triangel Azure bearing a barrel of the second charged with a plum blossom Argent; surmounteing the sheaf in chief a fleur-de-lis of the third.
Crest: From a wreath Or and Gules, upon a torteau a heraldic fountain Proper; ascending from in front of the torteau and surmounted by the fountain, a double-neaded eagle, wings displayed Sable.
Motto: Equal to the burden.

Distinctive Unit Insignia, Description: A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a blue triangle containing a gold barrel charged with a white plum blossom, behind and above the trinagle, a gold bundle of wheat bearing a blue fleur-de-lis. In base, a gold scroll inscribed "EQUAL TO THE BURDEN" in blue letters.

Origin/meaning

The Red field is for the Support Branch. The Wheat Sheaf and Barrel symbolises abundance of food and supplies. The Trinagle signifies the balanced and uniform operations of the Battalion and refers to the Motto. The Fleur-de-lis symbolises service in Europe and the Plum Blossom service in Okinawa. The Fountain symbolises service in the Pacific and the Rhineland. The Double-Heade Eagle further symbolise service in Germany. The Red roundel indicative of the Japanese Forces, represent the conquest of these. The Fountain surmounts both the Eagle and the Red Roundel, indicates Victory of the Allied Forces over both Germany and Japan in World War II.

The arms were approved on 27 june 2008. The Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved for the 497th Quartermaster Battalion on 13 June 1967. It was redesignated for the 494th Support Battalion on 16 September 2008.
