The design of the coat of arms is based on a proposal that entered the contest held in November 1995. The design combines elements from the two most prominent families of Vrbovec (and important for Croatia as a whole) - Zrinski and Patachich de Zajezda. Both family arms include the black wings, and the tower is further modification of the tower found in Zrinski arms.
