Vieil Hesdin was founded on the old ruins of the city of Hesdin, which was destroyed in 1553. The estate of Hesdin was re-established a few kilometres away, and the village on the old site was named Vieil-Hesdin, or Old Hesdin. The arms were already used by the old town, bit their origin is not known. It has been mentioned that to distinguish the arms Vieil-Hesdin used the arms with a silver field instead of gold. But this has not been proven and the municipality continues to use the historical arms.
