===Origin/meaning===
The arms show the badge of King François I (the salamander) and a chief with the French Royal fleur-de-kys. The arms were granted by King François I in May 1545 when he decided to rebuild Vitry en Perthois, destroyed by the soldiers of Charles V. The town was also renamed after him.
