Origin/meaning
The arms were adopted on September 14, 1989.
The upper part shows an eagle, symbol of strength and intelligence, above the peaks of the Maciço de Itatiaia mountain range. The mountains are coloured green, to indicate the importance as an ecological reserve.
The lower half shows symbols for industry, commerce and the power plant in the municipality.The shield is surrounded by the Ipê flower, the national flower of Brazil.
