HUNTLY

Incorporated into : 1975 Gordon District Council (1996 Aberdeenshire Area Council)

Arms (crest) of Huntly

Official blazon

Parted per saltire: paly of six Or and Sable and Azure, a boar's head couped of the First, armed Proper and langued Gules, in each flank.

Above the Shield is placed a mural coronet and in an Escrol over the same this Motto "Animo et Prudentia"; on a Compartment below the Shield are set for Supporters two greyhounds Proper collared Gules.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on April 23, 1936.

Huntly was erected into a Burgh of Barony in 1488 in favour of George, 2nd Earl of Huntly, and was in 1684 raised to a Burgh of Regality in favour of George, 1st Duke of Gordon.

The arms show the gold and black paly of the Stewart Earls of Atholl who were Lords of Strathbogie in medieval times, the burgh was in the Strathbogie area.

The golden boars' heads on the blue field are for Gordon, since Huntly is the heart of the Gordon country, and the greyhound supporters recall the deerhounds used as his supporters by the Marquess of Huntly.

The Latin motto "By courage and sound judgement" echoes the Marquess' mottoAnimo non Astutia.
