The arms were granted in 1769 when Pirmasens received city rights from Count Ludwig IX of Hessen-Darmstadt. At the same time a seal was devised showing a fortress with the lion of Hessen standing on two thunderbolts on the main tower, and surrounded by birds. This complicated and non-heraldic composition was transferred into more proper arms and granted on October 24, 1845 by King Ludwig I of Bayern. These were the arms as shown above. The city was simplified and the birds removed.
