Steinbach received city rights from King Richard II in 1258. The oldest seal of the city is known since 1313 and shows a castle. It is not unlikely that above the castle a small shield was added; the only surviving stamp of the seal, however, does not show the upper part. The second known seal, used from 1363-1596 already shows the above arms, with the canting stone (Stein). All later seals and images show the arms with the stone.
