In medieval times, the rights to hold markets and fairs were given by the king himself. Places that were granted these rights placed a cross on the marketplace and attached a glove to the cross that symbolised the kings glove to show that the market was authorized by worldly and clerical authorities. The arms have also been brought in connection with the right to have a court of law (usually trade fair days were also court days).
