The arms were granted in 1955.

The oldest seal of the town dates from 1514 and shows the local patron saint St. Ferrutius. The saint was the patron of the local Benedictan Abbey, founded in the 8th century. The saint holds a banner with a cross, a palm branch and a small shield with an escarbuncle. The latter may be derived from the arms of the Von Hattstein family, who at the time ruled the village. When the new arms were granted, the cross and the escarbuncle were combined.
