Region : Pohjois-Savo
Former province : 1997-2009 Itä-Suomi (until 1997 Kuopio)
Additions: 1969 Kuopion maalaiskunta; 1973 Riistavesi; 2005 Vehmersalmi; 2011 Karttula; 2013 Nilsiä; 2015 Maaninka; 2017 Juankoski (1971 Muuruvesi, Säyneinen)
Official blazon
Katkoisen kilven mustassa yläkentässä pyst yssä viritetty jousi ja sen yläpuolella kruunu; kaikki kultaa, paitsi nuolen kärki ja sulitettu pyrstö hopeaa, hopeisessa ala kentässä punainen yksitorninen kirkko, jonka ovi- ja ikkuna-aukot mustat.
Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on June 12, 1958.
The arms are a combination of the arms of the Savo (later Kuopio) province (bow and arrow) and the local church. The arms were first granted in 1823. The crown above the bow and arrow indicate that the town was a local capital in the 17th century.
The arms from 1823 |
In the middle of the 19th century B. Kene designed new arms, with only the church and the provincial arms in the upper right corner. These arms were not adopted.
The proposal of Kene |
The colour of the arms was not properly determined, so in the 19th century and early 20th century different colour combinations appeared. Only in 1958 the colours were designed.
The arms in 1905 |
The arms on a road sign |
