Origin/meaning
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
The silver lion is taken from the arms of an Irish Lane family and is used here to symbolise the last name of the bishop. The purple field is taken from the arms of Mathias Loras after whom he was named. The lion stands on a sun, symbol of Thomas Aquinas, the patron saint of the bishop.
The lion holds in it's right paw a golden and crowned rose taken from the coat of arms of one Irish Barrett family to represent the bishop's mother.
The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop.
