As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The garb represents the bishops native city, Minneapolis, known as the "Miller of the West". The green field suggests the great plains of South Dakota as well as the liturgical colour for the growth in the Faith.
The crescent symbolizes Mary Immaculate and the Latin Crosslet represents the bishop's faith, commitment and his mission to the faithful entrusted to his care.
The heraldic chief comes from the Carlson family arms. The wavy bars represents the Sioux River and the bishops services in Sioux Falls.
The motto means ¨Before the Cross there is no defence´.
The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of (arch)bishop by instruction of the Holy See, of March 1969, confirmed in March 2001.
