Origin/meaning
The arms are based on the arms of a Finnigan family and are used here to symbolise the last name of the bishop. The sword is reversed to provide a prominent cross with a wavy blade allusive of water, a Christian symbol, and the sea and river where Bishop Finnigan spent his youth. The lions may be taken as Divine Grace and Human Response. Each is charged, on its shoulder, with the blue Cross of Malta that is part of the crest of the State of Queensland. Each lion rests its paw on a simple milking stool which is in reference to Bishop Finnigan's connections with dairy farming. The border is alternately gold and blue: gold as allusive of the connection with Ballarat, rich in faith, gold and history, and blue which reminds one of water and also the background of the arms of the State of Victoria.
The motto "Come Follow Me" is taken from Mt. 4:.19. Each disciple must listen daily to the tall of the Lord so that the process of conversion to deeper faith and commitment to mission may grow continuously.
