' DANIEL FRANCIS DESMOND 'Born: April 4, 1884
Deceased: September 11, 1945
Bishop of Alexandria, 1932-1945
English | blazon wanted |
- (personal) Ermine, a saltire, and, in chief, a lion's head erased gules.
Origin/meaning
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
The cross and ermine field are taken from a Desmond family arms and thus symbolise the last name of the bishop. The lion;s head symbolises the first name, Daniel, the lion being a symbol for the Propher Daniel.
