The red and silver as well as the two red flanks with a silver point are based on the Canadian flag, as the archbishop was born in Canada. His Croat roots are symbolised by the checkerboard design, based on the [[Croatia]]n national arms.
 
The star refers to St. Mary, also known as the morning star. The scallop is a symbol for pilgrims and here seen to symbolise that all humans are pilgims to the heart. The Chi-Rho symbol is a symbol for Jesus.
