CALAFAT

District/county (județ) : Dolj

Stema Calafat

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on May 29, 2003.

The lion is the old symbol of Oltenia, present in the interwar heraldic tradition. The bombs are also a traditional heraldic element, alluding to the beginning of the War of Independence in 1877, from Calafat and Corabia starting the first assaults on the Turkish shore.

The caduceus is the symbol of the god of trade, Mercury, and refers to the position of commercial and transit center of the town, which is also a port on the Danube.

The mural crown with five crenellated towers shows that the locality has the status of a municipality.
