Coat of arms (crest) of Nyborg

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1938.

The arms are based on the oldest seal of the city, which dates from around 1300. The oldest known use of the seal dates from 1371, the oldest complete seal (see below) is known from 1536. The arms show the local castle, built around 1170 and are thus canting (Nyborg or new castle). The moon and crescent are symbols for eternity and St. Mary. The head, which appears in the 15th century, has an unknown origin.
