However, in this case as an Auxiliary Bishop the personal arms were already impaled with the diocesan arms, but in reversed sequence. Normally Auxiliary Bishops do not impale personal arms. | |||
The personal arms show a Celtic cross and 4 fleur-de-lis, these symbolise his two grandmothers who were French (fleur-de-lis), while my grandfathers were Irish (cross). | |||

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
