As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop. | |||
The arms are based on the arms of a Whealon family from Ireland to symbolise the last name of the Archbishop. The bend with lozenges and the chief with the two fleur-de-lys are taken from the arms of that family. The middle fleur-de-lys in the Whealon arms has been replaced by a crown. This represents the country of birth of the mother of the bishop, [[Sweden]]. | |||
The two additional scallops are the symbol of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of the bishop. They are red, for the martyrdom of the saint. | |||
The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop. | |||
