Origin/meaning
The background of the personal arms is blue in honor of our Blessed Lady, and the rose a symbol of Our Lady of Humility from the North American College in Rome, where Bishop Ott studied.
The chevron is emblematic of the Mississippi River and of the carpenter's plane. Bishop Ott was born in Gretna, La., near the banks of the Mississippi River, and the carpenter's plane. honors St. Joseph, the Bishop's patron saint as well as the patron of the Diocese of Baton Rouge.
A key and sword are joined together, symbolic of Sts. Peter and Paul. At the bottom of the key is a baseball, linking the sports appreciative Bishop Ott with his famous second cousin, major league Hall of Famer Mel Ott of the then New York Giants.
The motto Lux in Domino means Light in the Lord.
