Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on December 30, 1947.
Umeå became city rights in 1622, and in 1646 a royal letter prescribed that Umeå should have in its seal three reindeer heads. They alludes to the reindeer in the provincial arms of Västerbotten of which the new city was the capital.
