Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on January 19, 1934.
The oldest seal of Stockholm only shows a tower, it dates from around 1280. The second seal also shows a tower and city wall. The third, smaller, seal dates from around 1370 and is the first seal to show the head. The head gradually appears as arms and as a symbol of the city on seals, buildings and images.
The head is supposedly the head of St. Erik, the patron saint of the city and the country. He is often shown as a young man with relatively long hair. Even though the composition of the arms did not change, the shape of both the head and the crown have changed often, according to the style of the period.
