Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on July 20, 1997.
The chief refers to the mountains surrounding the town. The silver wavy bar symbolises the Kootenay River, which is rich in Kokanee Salmon, shown on the bar. The antique crown refer sto the nickname of Nelson, being the "Queen City of the Kootenays", and is based on the arms of British Columbia.
The puma (cougar, mountain lion) in the chief is an indigenous animal, and is used here as a reference to Hugh Nelson, Lieutenant Governor of the province, after whom the city is named. He was a stout advocate of the union of British Columbia and Canada, which is symbolised by the Maple leaf.
The motto is a challenge to the community to be progressive and forward thinking in its policies. and plans. It also refers to the processing of minerals from the mines surrounding the city.
