SAINT PAUL'S CATHEDRAL (London, Ontario)
Denomination :Anglican
Official blazon
Gules a sword in pale point in chief Argent hilt and pommel Or surmounted in fess point by a book expanded proper bound Or in dexter chief a trefoil slipped and in sinister chief a mullet of six points Or.
Motto :SPIRITUS GLADIUS
Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on May 24, 1989.
The open book and the sword are the heraldic symbols for St. Paul. The shamrock represents Bishop Benjamin Cronyn, the Irish-born first Bishop of Huron. The star represents Bishop Isaac Hellmuth, who came from a Polish Jewish family, was the diocese’s second bishop and first cathedral dean, and who also founded the University of Western Ontario.
The motto means "The sword of the spirit" (Ep 6:17).
