Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on May 3, 1952, abolished in 2003 and restored in 2012. Between 2003-2012 the municipality used the old arms of Vehkalahti.

The arms are based on the seal of the city Veckelax (the predecessor of Hamina city) dating from 1660. The crown was granted by King Frederik I (of Sweden). The town was founded as a harbour under the reign of Frederik I, which is symbollised by the boat and base. The town was renamed Frederikshamn, or later in Finnish abbreviated as Hamina.

Until the Finnish independence the twon also used the letter F under the crown for Frederik I.
