ESTAVAYER-LE-LAC
Canton: Fribourg
Official blazon
Origin/meaning
The arms with a single rose are based on the old arms of the Lords of Estavayer from the 13th century. They have been used as arms of the tows since the 16th century on seals (see below), on a key in the local church from 1502 and in many other places and sculptures from the early 16th century.

The contra-seal from the 16th (?) century |
The arms were no longer used by the town by the end of the 16th century. The arms were, however, used in the 19th century by the La Broye district, of which the town was the capital.
The arms with the rose on a divided shield appear for the first time in 1599 on a map of the town. They also appear on a seal from the early 17th century.

The arms have been used as such afterwards, even though the number of wavy bars has differed in time. The wavy bars may indicate the -de-Lac (=on the lake) part of the name.
