Origin/meaning

The arms of Esztergom province depict St. Adalbert the Bishop of Prague, who was the patron saint of the Esztergomian diocese. St Adalbert was the person who baptized the first Hungarian king, István. The arms were granted in 1555 by King Ferdinand I. The archbishop of Esztergom is the Primate of Hungary and he was ever the fõispán ("sheriff") of the province.
