The Cross is the insignia of the Hoch und Deutschmeister (Grand Master of the Teutonic Order) this alludes to the Deutschmeister Regiment formed in 1696 by a convention between Emperor Leopold I and the then Grand Master of the Teutonic Order Franz Ludwig von Pfalz-Neuburg, and up until 1806 the Grand Master was Colonel-in-chief of the Regiment. In 1806 the Grand Master lost his sovereignity and from then a Habsburg Archduke was Colonel-in-Chief (incidently the Post of Grand Master of the Order was filled by an Habsburg Archduke until 1923). In the Austro-Hungarian Army the Regiment ws given the number 4 among the Infantry and was during the last years of the Empire stationed in Vienna. The name and number was kept during the First Austrian Republic, and during World War II the 44. Infantry Division of the Wehrmacht formed from Austrian Units was given the title 44. Reichs-Grenadier Division Hoch- und Deutschmeister. The tradition of the Regiment was then honoured by the Army of Austira post war by first the Jaeger Regiment 2, the the Landwehrstammregiment 21 and then the Jaeger Regiment Wien and today by the Jaeger Battalion Wien 1.
