Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on October 11, 1966.

The arms were based on the town's seal from 1466. The town was founded in 1440 around a monastery. The town's name in Latin was Vallis Gratiae, hence the letters V and G. The crown was already present in the seal.

In the middle of the 19th century B. Kene proposed new arms, showing the design of the seal, but now with the provincial arms in the upper right part. These arms were not adopted.
