Administrative division
The Commonwealth of Australia is a federation comprising six states (New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania) that also has sovereignty over ten territories, three of which are located on the mainland (the Australian Capital Territory, the Northern Territory and Jervis Bay), the others being the Australian Antarctic Territory and six island territories (Norfolk Island, the Cocos Islands, Christmas Island, Ashmore and Cartier Islands, Heard and McDonald Islands and the Coral Sea Islands). The states and several of the territories are divided into local government areas of various designations (cities, shires, etc.), which provide Australia's third and lowest level of government, of which there are 565.
