Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The rope is knotted in a fashion known to sailing as ¨marling¨ and thus is a canting symbol. The five knots stands for the five wounds of Christ.

The lily is a symbol for Saint-Joseph and stands for the bishops baptismal name and the left hand comes from the coat of arms of O'Neill of Tyrone (Ireland), and honors his mother, member of that Irish family.

The red background of the shield and the drops of blood in chief represent the Society of Precious Blood of which bishop Marling was provincial. The red buffalo commemorates the founder of the society, Blessed Gasper del Bufalo.

The Latin motto Per Sanguinem Crucis ("by the blood of his cross") is canting for parts of the shield

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop by instruction of the Holy See, of March 1969, confirmed in March 2001.
