The cross gules on argent stands for the Christian Faith. The 6-pointed star stands for the Blessed Virgin Mary and the mystery of her Assumption. The cathedral is dedicated to Her under this title. The four flames symbolize the descendance of the  Holy Spirit. The flames also allude to the Sauk people, the native American nation after whom the city and Saginaw Bay were named.
